How to support a new mum

It’s no secret that the first few months of your baby’s life are a magical yet exhausting whirlwind. From precious first smiles to never-ending piles of nappies, every day brings something new. So, with this in mind, we’ve pulled together ten super thoughtful (and genuinely useful) ways you can support the new mums in your life. From popping in to do some cleaning to sending them a little gift, there are a bunch of different ways you can cheer them on.

But before we dive in, why not have a browse of our adorable new baby cards? Featuring sweet messaging and cute illustrations, we’ve got a variety of lovely designs.

And if you’re wondering what to say to a new mum, our blog on what to write in a new baby card is bursting with ideas!

   1. Prep some meals

Planning and prepping meals is often the last thing on your mind as a new mum, especially in the first 1-3 months of baby’s life. So, why not channel your inner chef and drop off some delicious meals? Whether it’s a fresh lasagne or her favourite curry, there’s nothing better than dinner being ready in minutes.

Oh, and bonus points if it can be eaten one-handed while holding a baby.

   2. Pop in to do some cleaning

If she’s feeling up to visitors, dropping in to help freshen up the house can be a big help. There’s no need to do a full-scale spring clean, but tackling the washing up and folding the laundry while you have a chat can be a huge weight off her shoulders.

   3. Spend some time together

Once the initial flurry of visitors dies down, there’s a chance feelings of loneliness might creep in. So, why not drop her a message and see if she’s up to having some company for a few hours?

Between nappy changes, feeds, and trying to remember what day it is, you’ll be able to remind her that she’s absolutely smashing it. And if she’s too exhausted for chatter, offer to watch the baby while she sneaks in a nap.

   4. Help with siblings

If she’s got toddlers running around adding to the chaos, taking them out for a few hours can be a lifesaver. Whether you head to the park, visit a museum, or do some at-home crafts, this is a brilliant way to give mum a breather and make sure the older kids feel special too. And if she’s got a fur baby, take on the weekly dog walking duties instead!

   5. Create a yes jar

All you’ll need for this one is a clear jar, some strips of paper, and a pen. Next, jot down some thoughtful gestures you’re happy to help out with and drop them inside! Some examples include:

  • A free babysitting voucher (aka you)
  • Her favourite coffee and croissant delivered
  • A venting session (with absolutely no judgement)

She’ll be able to pick out a token whenever she needs a lift and you’ll be able to swoop in to save the day.

   6. Build a pamper hamper

Another option is to build her a self-care basket filled with all her favourite things! From luxury facemasks and bath salts to fluffy socks and more, there are a bunch of different items you can add. Include some sweet treats and finish it off with a label that reads ‘for when baby’s finally asleep’.

   7. Run some errands

Whether it’s picking up prescriptions, posting parcels, or grabbing a few groceries, little errands can feel like huge tasks for new mums. So, if you’ve got a spare hour, help tick a few things off her to-do list! She’ll definitely appreciate such a thoughtful gesture.

   8. Capture special memories

New mums are often the ones behind the camera, so once she’s got into the swing of things and is feeling up to it, you could offer to take a few pictures of her with her little one. For a treasured keepsake, create a small photobook and send it to her as a surprise!

   9. Get some fresh air

While getting a baby ready to leave the house can feel like a military operation, heading out for some fresh air can work wonders for everyone. Whether you head out for a stroll around the park or spend the afternoon in the garden with a cuppa, a change of scenery can make the world of difference.

   10. Send a thoughtful gift

While showering the new bundle of joy with gifts is a must, don’t forget to spoil mum too. Whether it’s some cosy loungewear or an audiobook subscription that she can make use of on those sleepless nights, a kind token can go a long way.

Or there’s always the option of sending her a cute thinking of you card. After all, when baby’s been screaming since 3am, a few words of encouragement can mean a lot. And if you’re wondering what to say to a new mum, we’re thinking something along the lines of: ‘You’re doing great! Little one is so lucky to have you’.

And there you have it: a roundup of our favourite ways to support the new mum in your life. Forget the grand gestures, it’s the small, thoughtful things that count the most. Whether it’s showing up with a coffee or sending a message to cheer her on, every bit of support helps.
